PipesLine #2-09

Greetings:

I arrived back yesterday afternoon (Friday) from Uganda.  It was one of those trips that if I was to try and convey all the events it would take me a week to write it.

First one comment I continually heard from the staff was, "we must have one heck of a prayer support.”  And when you stop and think about it we do, churches in Ukraine, Africa and around the USA have been faithfully helping us go from strength to strength by prayer.

The Ukraine interns arrived as planned.  For the first few days their eyes stayed the size of silver dollars.  They were amazed at the conditions of the country, just how poor it is. And they could not stop commenting about the volume of people everywhere.

They have their living place, a small room for sleeping, a small bathing room, no hot water, and another small sitting room.  Their monthly budget is 200 per month.  This keeps them alive, dry and fed.  They will be eating a lot of rice, beans and matoke, (a type of banana that is cooked and served like mashed potatoes.)

They will be actively involved in youth groups and other activities that will give them opportunities to be an encouragement not only to believers but non-believers also.

Hannah, Aiden, Loring, Ben and DanielThe Morris family arrived the following day; I think it was sixteen suitcases that came rolling out of the customs door at the airport along with Dan, Loring, Aiden, Hannah, and Ben. We loaded everyone up with bags in a small land rover and made the hour drive to Kampala from the airport. It was easy to see from their body language expressions that they now realized that this is for real.  Even though they had been to Uganda on short term trips in the past, nothing hits you like the reality of---this is now home, and what am I doing here!

Their home is located just about 200 yards from the slum area of Kampala.  The house is very secure with large walls and a metal gate.  Like all people living in such homes in Uganda, nationals or foreigners, they will have a nightly house guard. They spent the first five days painting, fixing screens, buying furniture and household items.  They planned on moving in this weekend.

In addition to this I had the opportunity to teach during the day and preach at the nightly crusades.  Since the focus for the new International Messengers staff will be discipleship I shared on the importance of the church having a solid discipleship process.  I primarily used 2 Peter 1: 1-11.  I was greatly encouraged by the response to the teaching in both ministry locations, Kampala and our rural ministry in Busanna.

The bag of drugs from a new believerThis was one of the most effective crusades I recall being part of in Uganda.  Location was excellent; large crowds each evening and most importantly response to the Gospel. One of the evenings I had a young  man come forward and surrender his bag of drugs to me and pray to receive Christ. I was told that the drugs are given by the local witchdoctor to many people.  I do not know what it was for sure, but witchdoctor just sounds like another term for “drug dealer” to me.

Next Sunday I leave for Montana for a week of teaching at “IM’s training center.  In addition I will be spending a week  with another intern we are sending to Uganda next month. Obbie Todd will leave on February 8 for six months.  He will also be living with Pastor Joel partnering with the Ukraine interns.

February 8-10 I will be at Emmaus Bible College in Iowa for a mission conference.  My next trip back to Uganda will be March 31-April 9 with a college team from Missouri and others from California.

Again thank you for your awesome support. So many things could have fallen apart on this trip, but it went as we had been praying for.
