Greetings from Busana

Greetings from Busana.

It is Wednesday evening and we have just finished our third day in the field in the greater Busana area. Up to this point, we had spent most of the trip in Jinja conducting our men’s and women’s conferences. For the rest of the trip, we will be in Busana helping to support the local people and churches.

Tom Gibbons and Matthew have been busy building bookshelves, benches and a pulpit for a new resource center that is just being completed across the street from the Busana Joy Baptist Church. In addition to Matthews’s assistance with the carpentry work, he is also spending time playing and getting to know the children in the village. Most of the time, they climb and pick fruit from the trees and play soccer. Matthew has a big heart for the kids and they seem to really love him. They still yell Moo-zoon-goo and run after Matt. I am calling him the Pied Piper of Busana.

Here are a few pictures of Matthew’s new friends

The resource center is a multi-purpose facility that will house books, sleeping rooms for missionaries to stay (Deb is considering moving there in a couple weeks) and a a couple of sewing machines that members of the team purchased to help local women sew clothing for their use or for sale to generate income for their families. If any of you have antique sewing machines from your great grandma at home with the pedal under the table -that is what they look like except they are new. Singer still makes these machines as a relatively large portion of the world is still without electricity – including Busana. Deb, Karen and Nancy are teaching about 20 women to sew this week.

For the past two days, I have been leading bible studies at the Zimbabado village about 10 minutes by boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) with Pastor James. We do a study from 10 AM– 12:00 PM and from 2 – 4 PM. Now when I say village, I mean African village.

Here are a few pictures to show you. The first picture is me and my boda-boda driver. The second is one of the huts and a cooking area in the village. The third picture with the tarp roof is where we teach to avoid the sun. The forth picture is of Pastor James working on his drumming techniques while we sing before beginning the study.
